Last Wednesday several hundred staff from all corners of UQ met with the bargaining team to discuss progress of our log-of-claims. The lively discussion covered too many topics to report in detail (a full report is here) but in short, the overall message was a lack of progress on job security, safe workloads and a real pay rise. There was lots of discussion around excessive workloads for professional and academic staff with reported cases of actual physical and mental health impacts occurring. To date management have failed to offer a solution that addresses lack of recognition, job insecurity and lack of career paths for long-term casuals.

The pay offer put by management, less the cost of our claims and less the cost of management claims, potentially totals less than 10% between 1 July 2021 and early 2025.

The UQ staff at this meeting resolved to continue to take industrial action until significant and across the board progress is achieved on our log of claims, particularly around casual conversions, workload and pay claims.

We plan to make our voices heard across the state next with a rally on Thursday at King George Square at 1pm. If travelling in from the St Lucia campus, please meet at the UQ Lakes bus stop at around 12.15pm – remember to wear your red t-shirt!

An update from our friends at QUT: "Members at QUT turned out for a half-hour stop work outside the room where bargaining was happening to let management know what they expected. There were some speeches and some superb chanting that could have made it through the thickest of walls." There's some good reporting on the action and their industrial campaign by the QUT student publication.

Monday 19 September 2022

Following our successful action on 1 September, we've called a one-day strike for this Wednesday as part of our campaign for secure jobs, safe workloads and a real pay rise.

Management have asked how serious we are about securing an Enterprise Agreement this year. Let's show them!

Remember, ahead of Wednesday's strike, we're holding a rally on campus from midday tomorrow (Tuesday 20 September 2022). NTEU members are able to take industrial action from midday to 1pm to attend. Those who haven't yet joined are invited to attend during their lunch break. Please join us in your red NTEU t-shirts (or any other red shirt your can find!)

On the day of the strike, there is an in-person picket out the front of the university on the corner of Sir Fred Schonell Drive and Coldridge Street from 8am. And for those striking at home come along to an online picket from 10am - Register here.

Ban on responding to enquiries

This week, members can also apply a ban on responding to enquiries (see our FAQ for more info on applying this ban).

Last week's ban on attending meetings with managers has been lifted.

Our handy FAQ also contains some useful information for taking protected industrial action: Download this FAQ about industrial action at UQ.

As always, industrial action is more effective when we tell our colleagues and students why we're taking it!

Please put up this poster in your work area today!

We'll be maintaining our morning flag-waving and handing out flyers to promote our rally. Please consider helping out - even it If you can spare some time of a morning this week to help fly our flags, please get in touch: uq@nteu.org.au.

Finally, please make sure to click attending on and share our Facebook events (links above), and post any strike photos you've taken up there as well. Cheers!
